Run by local parent, Harry
Malakoff, this league combines volunteer coaching, mentorship opportunities,
and strong community and parental support with a well-run basketball league
for 9-14 year old girls. The League emphasizes fun, teamwork, and a chance
for everyone to play. Winning is NOT the most important goal.

By clearly articulating a
mission of inclusion and leading a highly motivated and compassionate team of
teachers and social workers, Principal John Pettinato has been able to
realize his dream of a creative, exciting, and holistic educational program
that has room for young people from all backgrounds. ICE has become an
innovative academic community and a replicable model of youth engagement. ICE
currently provides a curriculum and indeed a school day that can support and
nurture an incredibly diverse student body -- one that includes young people
from virtually every social, ethnic, and economic class.

In July 2002, with NYC
Department of Youth Community Development’s support, GVYC was able to
expand its street outreach program, Where is Safe? to include daily van-based
street outreach, a 24/7 emergency housing hotline, and referrals in the Bronx and Manhattan. Our outreach teams are
comprised of experienced drivers and outreach workers who have first-hand
knowledge of the experiences of the youth we are outreaching to. Our goal is
to find every youth in need on the street and offer them the opportunity to
leave the unsafe place to a safe environment.
Starting September 2006, Where
is Safe? offers mobile street outreach services to runaway and homeless youth
in Manhattan below 59th Street, Brooklyn and Staten Island between the hours of 9 pm and 5 am seven days a week. We staff the
outreach teams with experienced driver, social worker or peer educators,
providing information, food, clothing referrals, and safer sex supplies.
