The Neutral Zone has been a drop-in center for gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans-gender and questioning runaway and homeless youth from the age of 15 to 22 since 1992. There, young people are met with more than basic needs. They receive support and connection from members of their own community. Our well-trained and caring staff provides counseling or referrals and diverse activities such as HIV/AIDS counseling, substance abuse prevention, educational and recreational activities. Due to budget cuts, the Zone is struggling to survive. Please contact Jess Nemoy, Development Director, at jess.nemoy@gvyc.net to donate and keep doors open! In July 2002, with NYC Department of Youth Community Development's support, GVYC was able to expand its street outreach program, Where is Safe? to include daily van-based street outreach, a 24/7 emergency housing hot line, and referrals in the Bronx and Manhattan. Our outreach teams are comprised of experienced drivers and outreach workers who have first-hand knowledge of the experiences of the youth we are outreaching to. Our goal is to find every youth in need on the street and offer them the opportunity to leave the unsafe place to a safe environment. Since September 2006, the program -renamed Runaway and Homeless Outreach- offers mobile street outreach services to runaway and homeless youth in Manhattan below 59th Street, Brooklyn and Staten Island between the hours of 9 pm and 5 am seven days a week. We staff the outreach teams with experienced drivers and social worker or peer educators. This service provides information, food, clothing referrals, and safer sex supplies.
